Crasche Hats Provide Protection for People with Special Needs

Hats Help Prevent Serious Head Injury in a Dignified Manner

Crasche® New York said today that it has been receiving increased bulk and individual orders for the Crasche hat to meet the needs of dementia patients and people with special needs who require head protection. The developing niche was unexpected for a company that set out to provide protective head gear for sports and leisure activities.

Crasche has received a bulk order from a skilled nursing facility for its patients who suffer from dementia. Although they require very little assistance when walking, they may, at times, experience falls as a result of their dementia. The nursing staff and the residents have found the hats as a better alternative to the helmets, which are cumbersome, ill-fitting and not attractive. The hat was originally designed for those engaging in sporting activities, such as skiing, snowboarding, bike riding and skateboarding, where participants may not want to wear a helmet, but need impact protection.

Crasche has also received numerous individual orders from families with children with special needs who require protective head gear. The children liked the hats not only for the impact protection, but because it looked stylish and felt comfortable, according to the families.

Each hat is 100% Acrylic. The outer layers of the inserts are composed of a strong polycarbonate plastic, the same material used to make bulletproof glass. The inner layers are made of neoprene rubber, which is also used in the making of wet suits, and contain a series of air chambers that help cushion the impact and help spread the force of the impact over the entire insert. In addition to outdoor sports, the Crasche hat can be used in law enforcement and military applications and in other instances where head protection is essential but a helmet is not required.

“People who need to wear protective head gear may feel stigmatized, but the look of the Crasche hat removes that stigma,” said Robert Emmett, the hat’s designer. “It looks like a regular ski hat, so it provides both comfort and style. The hats also provide impact protection for special-needs people in a dignified manner.”

The hats can be worn, with or without the protective inserts. In addition, all Crasche hats are made in the United States in the state of New York.
